사실 며칠 전부터 제 친구가 한국 드라마 오징어 게임을 계속 추천했어요. 그런데 잔인한 장면을 보고 싶지 않아서 계속 고민했어요. 그러다가 어제 너무 심심해서 그냥 이 드라마를 봤어요. 

다행히 생각한 것 만큼 잔인하지는 않았어요. 하지만 피 흘리는 장면이 너무 많았어요. 그런데 줄거리가 너무 재미있어서 금새 빠져들었어요. 

이 드라마에서 엄청난 빚이 있는 사람들이 상금을 위해서 서로를 죽이는 살인 게임을 해요. 이 드라마의 게임은 어릴 때 한국의 아이들이 하는 전통 놀이예요. 그런데 게임에서 지거나 실패하면 바로 죽어요. 그래서 드라마를 보는 내내 계속 긴장되요. 

이 드라마를 다 보고 인간의 본성과 삶의 의미에 대해 생각하게 되었어요. 내가 게임에 참여하면 어떨지도 고민해봤어요. 만약 긴장감 넘치는 드라마를 좋아하면 이 드라마를 강력히 추천해요. 줄거리가 흥미롭고 비주얼 효과도 대단해요. 그래서 요새 많은 친구들에게 이 드라마를 계속 추천하고 있어요.

Actually, a few days ago, my friend kept recommending the Korean drama Squid Game. But I didn’t want to see the brutal scenes, so I kept hesitating about watching it. But yesterday, I was so bored that I ended up watching the drama.

Fortunately, it wasn’t as brutal as I thought. But there were too many bloody scenes. However, the plot was so interesting that I fell in love with it immediately.

It’s about people with huge debts playing games to kill each other to win a prize. The games in this drama are traditional Korean games played by children when they are young. But if the player loses or fails in the game, the player gets killed immediately. So I keep getting nervous while watching the drama.

After watching this drama, I started thinking about human nature and the meaning of life. I thought about what it would be like to participate in this game. If you like suspenseful dramas, I highly recommend this drama. The plot is exciting, and the visual effects are significant. That’s why I keep recommending this drama to many friends these days.

사실 몇 일 전부터 제 친구가 한국 드라마 오징어 게임을 계속 추천했어요. 그런데 잔인한 장면을 보고 싶지 않아서 계속 고민했어요. 그러다가 어제 너무 심심해서 그냥 이 드라마를 봤어요. 

In this part, we can hear the expressions 계속 and a verb. 계속 추천했어요. 계속 고민했어요. 

The word 계속 means “continuously” or “consecutively.” But it’s better to use this expression 계속 whenever we want to say a sentence to keep v-ing or continue v-ing. 

For example,

계속 추천했어요 I kept recommending,

계속 고민했어요 I kept hesitating

So if we listen to the sentences with using this expression in the story again…

제 친구가 한국 드라마 오징어 게임을 계속 추천했어요. My friend kept recommending the Korean drama Squid Game.

그런데 잔인한 장면을 보고 싶지 않아서 계속 고민했어요. But I didn’t want to see the brutal scenes, so I kept hesitating about watching it.

In this part, let’s learn – 만큼. If this expression is used with a noun in Korean, then it means as (adjective/adverb) as the noun.

그 팟캐스트는 한국어 스터디 카페만큼 도움이 되요 That podcast is as helpful as Korean Study Cafe

So if we listen to the sentence with this expression in the story again, it’s like this

생각한 것 만큼 잔인하지는 않았어요. It wasn’t as brutal as I thought.

이 드라마에서 엄청난 빚이 있는 사람들이 상금을 위해서 서로를 죽이는 살인 게임을 해요. 이 드라마의 게임은 어릴 때 한국의 아이들이 하는 전통 놀이예요. 그런데 게임에서 지거나 실패하면 바로 죽어요. 그래서 드라마를 보는 내내 계속 긴장되요. 

As we hear the sentence “이 드라마에서 엄청난 빚이 있는 사람들이 상금을 위해서 서로를 죽이는 살인 게임을 해요.” In this drama, people with huge debts play a killing game to kill each other for a prize.

“상금을 위해서” for a prize and some people say like 상금을 위해 without a syllable 서, but both forms 위해서 and 위해 mean the same.

This pattern is used when performing or acting for the sake of something or to do something. 

내가 너를 위해서 이 선물을 준비했어 I prepared this gift for you.

우리 아버지는 가족을 위해서 항상 열심히 일해요. My father always works hard for our family.

정치인들은 나라를 위해 일해야 돼요 Politicians have to work for their country.

So if we listen to the sentence with this expression in the story again, it’s like this

“이 드라마에서 엄청난 빚이 있는 사람들이 상금을 위해 서로를 죽이는 살인 게임을 해요” In this drama, people with huge debts play a killing game to kill each other for a prize.

So now we know how to use the expression 위해서 or 위해, let’s hear the rest part.

There are many good expressions when describing how good a drama or a movie is in Korean.

• 긴장감 넘치는 드라마 suspenseful drama / 저는 긴장감 넘치는 드라마를 제일 좋아해요. I like the suspenseful drama the most (My favorite genre is suspenseful ones)

• 강력히 추천하다 to recommend strongly / 저는 한국 드라마를 강력히 추천하고 싶어요. I strongly recommend Korean dramas. 

• 줄거리 plot, storyline / 그 영화는 줄거리가 별로예요 The storyline of the movie isn’t good

• 비주얼 효과 visual effect / 그 영화의 비주얼 효과는 엄청나요 The visual effects of the movie is incredible.
