V: 크리스 씨, 이렇게 와 주셔서 감사해요.

         Chris, thank you for being here.

 C: 아니에요. 초대해주셔서 감사합니다. 사실 한국에서 다른 사람 집에 초대 받은 건 이번이 처음이에요. 너무 기뻐요.

         Not at all. Thank you for inviting me. Actually, this is the first time I’ve been invited to someone’s house in Korea. I’m so excited.

V: 어서 오세요. 지금 제가 아직도 부엌에서 음식을 차리고 있는 중이에요. 이리로 오세요. 제 옆에 앉으실래요?

         Please come in. I’m still preparing food in the kitchen. Please come here. Would you like to sit next to me?

C: 네. 좋아요.

         Sure, I would be great

V: 그럼 맛있게 드세요.

         Then, please enjoy it. bon appetit

C: 네, 맛있게 먹겠습니다. 그나저나 집이 정말 예뻐요. 게다가 이 음식 정말 맛있어요. 이 음식은 이름이 뭐예요?

V: 감사합니다. 그건 구절판이라고 해요. 크리스 씨 입맛에 맞아요?

어서 오세요. 지금 제가 아직도 부엌에서 음식을 차리고 있는 중이에요. 이리로 오세요. 제 옆에 앉으실래요?

네. 좋아요.

In this part, we can learn a sentence structure like “It’s my first time to do something” in Korean.

In this part, we could hear that Chris said “한국에서 다른 사람 집에 초대 받은 건 처음이에요.” It’s my first time getting invited to another’s house in Korea.

처음이에요 means It’s my first time in Korean. To explain what was the first time for you, you have to use a sub sentence with nounizing. So in most cases, people use -는/은 것 form.

And when this form 것 meet topic particles 은/는, it can be combined into 건(것은).

So then, if you hear the sample sentences, you will understand better.

• 한국을 여행한 건 이번이 처음이에요. This is my first time to travel Korea

• 남자친구를 사귄 건 이번이 처음이에요. This is my first time have a boyfriend

• 김치를 먹어본 건 오늘이 처음이에요. Today is my first time trying Kimchi

In this part, we can learn about Korean meal culture.

We have this culture that people who got served food from others say “맛있게 먹겠습니다” Thank you for the food” to express their gratitude for the food before having the meal. Its literal translation is “I will eat it deliciously.” Also, people who prepare the food for others usually say 맛있게 드세요. Bon appetit / Enjoy your meal. Its literal translation is “Eat it deliciously.”

Even though you want to speak 요 ending honorific level, for these expressions, it’s better to say in the most honorific level like the examples. That’s because Korean people tend to say the expressions for delivering their sincere feelings like thank you, sorry, or Enjoy your meal at the most honorific level.

These expressions are also expressed diversely like this

To say “thank you for the food.”

• 맛있게 먹겠습니다

• 잘 먹겠습니다

And to say, “Enjoy your meal.”

• 맛있게 드세요. 

• 차린게 없어도 맛있게 드세요. Even though I didn’t prepare much, enjoy your meal

The expression that we just heard “차린게 없어도 맛있게 드세요. Even though I didn’t prepare much, enjoy your meal” is more likely to be used by older people. As being humble is very important in Korean culture, they tend to express it like this.

Korean people use this expression when an object but mostly food is perfect for your taste or preference.

 If you use this expression with food, it’s like this

• 이 김치는 제 입맛에 완전히 딱 맞아요. This kimchi is perfectly suits my taste

• 그 식당 음식은 제 입맛에 맞아서 자주 가요. The food at that restaurant is perfect for me, so I often visit there

• 제 음식이 정국 씨 입맛에 맞는지 모르겠어요. I’m not sure if my food suits your taste (I’m not sure if you would like my food)

 Also this expression can be used to describe an object

• 팟캐스트를 들으면서 공부하는 것이 나에게 딱 맞아요 Studying with listening to podcasts is perfect for me

• 이 원피스 사이즈가 나에게 딱 맞아요 This dress’s size is perfect for me

• 그 일은 내 입맛에 딱 맞지 않지만 당분간은 계속 그 일을 할 거예요. Although that work doesn’t suit my preference, I will keep working for now
